Why Client Care Training Matters: Equipping Compassionate Peer Support Volunteers

Peer support is not counselling or therapy. It is the practice of walking alongside another person with empathy, compassion, and respect while helping them explore their situation, identify their strengths, and connect with helpful resources.
At Options, our volunteers are not expected to have all the answers. Instead, they are trained to create a safe, non-judgmental space where individuals feel heard, valued, and supported as they navigate difficult decisions and circumstances.

When someone feels truly listened to, understood, and cared for, it can help reduce feelings of isolation and create space for hope, clarity, and connection. Sometimes, one compassionate conversation can make a meaningful difference.
A Word from Our Client Care Director

“I first took the Client Care Training when I volunteered with Options briefly over 10 years ago. The training helped to inform the care and compassion I brought to each of my social work clients after that. Despite not working in the pregnancy care field for those 10 years, I encountered many women who were faced with an unexpected pregnancy. Being knowledgeable about trauma informed care, listening techniques, and the realities of women and men who face unexpected pregnancies, as well as the support that is available, was hugely beneficial. I can’t wait to facilitate the upcoming training so that more people in our community can be better equipped to respond with grace and compassion to the people in their circles faced with pregnancy related challenges or losses.”
Why is training so important?
Supporting someone through a pregnancy-related challenge is a privilege—and a responsibility.
Good intentions alone are not enough. Every volunteer who meets with clients needs the skills to listen well, communicate respectfully, recognize their own biases and respond appropriately to complex situations.
Our training helps volunteers:
Understand the diverse experiences and needs of individuals facing pregnancy-related challenges.
Recognize their own assumptions and biases so they can provide compassionate, client-centred support without pressure.
Share accurate and balanced information about parenting, adoption, and abortion at the clients pace.
Build confidence in active listening, crisis support, and healthy communication.
Become familiar with local and government resources available to support individuals and families.
Know when a situation requires referral to a healthcare professional or another specialized service.
Training ensures that every client receives consistent, compassionate, and high-quality care, regardless of which volunteer they meet.
How does faith fit into this?
Options Pregnancy Centre is a Christian organization. We believe the Church has an important role to play in caring for and serving our community, especially those facing difficult or unexpected circumstances.
Our Client Care Training is faith-based and rooted in our understanding of God's love, compassion, and the inherent value of every person. This foundation shapes how we seek to care for others—with humility, grace, respect, and genuine compassion.
Just as Jesus welcomed people from every background and every walk of life, we strive to be a welcoming space for everyone who comes through our doors, whether they share our faith, practice another faith, or do not identify with any faith at all. Every person is treated with dignity, respect, and care, without pressure.
At the same time, we recognize that some clients desire to explore the spiritual aspects of their journey or seek encouragement in their Christian faith. Our training prepares volunteers to thoughtfully and respectfully support these conversations when invited, while always honouring each client's beliefs, choices, and comfort level.
Learning to support without pressure
One of the most valuable parts of the training is learning to recognize how our own experiences, beliefs, and assumptions can influence the way we support others.
Rather than telling someone what they should do, volunteers learn to ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully, provide balanced information, and empower each client to make informed decisions without pressure.
Our goal is not simply to provide information—it is to create an environment where every person feels safe, respected, and genuinely cared for.

Interested in taking our Client Care Training?
If you have a heart for walking alongside women and families with compassion, we’d love to hear from you.
Our next Client Care Training will be offered in the fall and will run over 5 sessions. Whether you’re exploring volunteer opportunities or wondering if client care is the right fit for you, we’d be happy to answer your questions.
Our Client Care Training is open to both Options volunteers, church ambassadors and community members who are interested in learning how to better support individuals facing pregnancy-related challenges.
Please note that completing the training does not automatically qualify someone to provide direct client care at Options. Volunteers who wish to serve as Client Care Advocates also participate in an interview process, receive ongoing training and mentorship, and are supported through continued professional development. This ensures that every client receives compassionate, consistent, and high-quality care.
