Dear Community Members
As the Executive Director of Options Pregnancy Centre Lennoxville, I am honored to share our heart and drive. We are a Christian ministry dedicated to welcoming everyone, ensuring that those facing unplanned pregnancies know they have options and can find genuine support and hope in our community. We envision a future where the church and society are so compassionate that our services are no longer needed.
Some women, when finding out they are unexpectedly pregnant, feel like abortion is their only option. Over the next three years, we are committed to being the safe haven for women considering whether abortion is or was the right choice for them. We provide a supportive environment where individuals can make pregnancy decisions that are informed, evidence-based, and aligned with their belief systems, free from outside pressure. Our core values focus on empowering women and families by equipping them with necessary tools and resources and advocating for those grappling with the decision of abortion, parenting, or placing for adoption. We acknowledge that the work we do is sensitive, and a controversial political & social topic. Our centre seeks to advocate for a society where fewer women feel that abortion is their only option, not by restricting access to abortion, but by expanding the support and alternatives available to them. It’s about fostering an environment where women are empowered to make informed and supported decisions, whatever they may choose. We believe in our clients' free will to make their own decisions and understand that their choice is significant, complex, and life-impacting for everyone involved. Our information, methodologies, and materials are carefully reviewed by external medical and mental health professionals to ensure accuracy and adherence to best practices. Inspired by the story of Hagar, the first crisis pregnancy recorded in the Bible (Genesis 16), we strive to be a safe place where women can share their stories without fear of judgment. Just as God first cared about Hagar’s story and listened to her, we are dedicated to honoring each woman's journey. As Corey Purdy-Smith said, a pro-choice activist from Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, "if there is anything that both sides of the debate can agree on it is that the fewer abortions there are, the better. [...] Pro-choice is as much about ensuring a woman’s right to not abort as it is about her right to abort." (2008). Thank you for your support as we work to create hope and support for women and families facing the complexities of unplanned pregnancy. With gratitude, Hannah Hornibrook Executive Director

We ensure that we update our information according to the Quebec government, medical professionals, local abortion clinic information, and mental health experts. We believe informed consent is crucial when making such hard, complex and life-changing decisions. How do you support women facing unplanned pregnancy to make confident decisions? At Options Pregnancy Centre Lennoxville, we provide a safe and non-judgemental space that seeks to listen to each client's unique story. We empower women to make confident and informed decisions by ensuring that every session is client-led, respecting their autonomy and personal journey. Our approach focuses on identifying the client's strengths, helping them see how these can be utilized in their decision-making process. We work with them to analyze any potential pressures they may be experiencing, fostering an environment where they can openly explore their feelings. This supportive and non-directive process allows women to make decisions that truly reflect their values and desires, free from external pressures. Success to us looks like a client leaving knowing that they are valued, respected, and supported; no matter the decision she makes on her pregnancy. We also are growing our Connect Resources Program. We recognize that our communities services are better together. If we notice a need or pressure a client is experiencing that cannot be met at the centre, we connect them with external resources and opportunities related, but not limited to, housing, nutrition, mental health, medical, immigration, and more.

If someone wants an abortion, what do you tell them?We always offer to talk about the abortion options so that she is prepared in her expectations to navigate the experience. Regardless of your pregnancy outcome, we offer care. We are however not a medical facility that performs or arranges abortions. In Quebec, no referral is needed to access abortion services. Should your decision to terminate be made and you do not feel the need for additional support, we encourage you to contact your primary healthcare provider, local CLSC or local Family Planning Centre to confirm your pregnancy and speak with a medical professional for more information. Please know that you are always welcome to discuss and debrief before and after an abortion experience as well as access other services at Options. We are here for you!

Do you provide contraception or birth control?Since we are not a medical clinic, we do not provide medical advice or prescriptions, including for contraception.

How does your Christian faith impact the service you provide to clients?Every non profit and organization is operating on a bias. We are transparent with all our clients, supporters and communications on what we believe and our goals with serving our community. We acknowledge that Christians do not all share the same belief on the morality or legality of abortion. At our centre, we train our staff and volunteers to avoid political debates on controversial topics related to the choices of our clients. God teaches us to care for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of all people and therefore we have chosen to adopt a pastoral role when working with our clients. We demonstrate the love of Jesus by relieving external & internal pressure of people in crisis. We also offer a space to talk through their own faith journey and how it impacts them; at their pace and timing. Stats show that 1 in 3 women will have an abortion or face the decision to have an abortion. This includes women from all religious backgrounds as well. We offer a safe space for them to find grace and comfort, knowing that they are valuable and loved regardless of pregnancy decision. We are uniquely positioned to offer services to women and families in the Eastern Townships facing unplanned pregnancies, and are passionate about meeting their needs.

Can we believe in a woman’s right to choose while also in reducing abortion numbers?Yes — we can believe in a woman’s right to choose while reducing the number of abortions by addressing the root issues behind most abortion decisions. Research shows that the majority of women who have abortions do so because of a lack of emotional support and practical resources — not because they want an abortion, but because they feel isolated, ashamed, or overwhelmed. When we respond with compassion and provide meaningful support, more women who desire to choose parenting or adoption can do so without fear or pressure. Although we are non-political, we apprciated what Corey Purdy-Smith said, a pro-choice activist from Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, in regards to believing in a women's choice while also in believing in reducing the number of abortions women endure. “As a pro-choice activist I am always surprised to hear others talk about how much I love abortions. I’d never thought of myself as actually liking abortions, but to hear the comments of nearly every single pro-life writer, politician and activist, you’d think that I and all my cohorts just go all gooey inside every time a woman walks into a clinic. For some reason ‘Pro-Choice’ has come to mean ‘Pro-Abortion’ in the minds of our opponents and even in the minds of the mainstream public. This is unfortunate because if there is anything that both sides of the debate can agree on it is that the fewer abortions there are, the better. For the pro-choice folks this is because any woman, given the choice, would prefer to either bring life into the world or avoid pregnancy altogether rather than endure an abortion. Women only choose abortion when their other choices have failed them or have been denied them. This means that as pro-choice activists our duties go far beyond fighting for the legalization of abortion. Here in Canada, that happened 20 years ago. If legalizing abortion was all pro-choice was about, we could have packed up and moved on long ago. But pro-choice means a great deal more. In fact, pro-choice is as much about ensuring a woman’s right to not abort as it is about her right to abort” (2008). We know abortion is not as simple as what some may say. We believe it is a complex, hard, and life-altering decision for everyone involved. You can read more of her letter here: https://www.arcc-cdac.ca/pro-choice-is-not-pro-abortion/

Do clients need to be Christian to receive services or be willing to talk about God?No, we believe that we are to love and serve everyone; regardless of their faith, ideology, gender, or culture background. All of our sessions are client-led. We will only talk about our faith if the client is comfortable and interested. Spiritual care is a service offered only if requested.

Is your centre pro-life or anti-abortion?If by pro-life you mean a shared belief that all human beings have intrinsic value, yes, we are. However, the terms pro-life, pro-choice, anti-choice, and anti-abortion have become politicized, polarizing, and confusing. We are pro-women and pro-information. Our goal is to provide a safe place for those experiencing the challenges of an unexpected pregnancy to work through their unique pregnancy situation and empower them to make an informed decision. Our goal is for women to know they have choices and that they are not alone. We do not engage in the political debates of the pro-life or pro-choice movements so that we can offer a safe space without pressure for our clients. It is about their values and circumstances, not ours.

Why don't you help clients get abortions? We believe in transparency to build trust with all our clients. As we are not a medical facility, we do not arrange or perform abortions. All clients are made aware of this before services are given. There are two reasons for this: (1) We are faith-based, which does not prevent us from giving factual information about abortion, but due to our beliefs, we cannot assist in arranging for abortions; (2) Some women seek support after an abortion, and centres want to be a safe place for women to work through any negative emotions they may experience after an abortion – if a centre was part of the abortion process, it may no longer be viewed as a safe place for a healing and recovery journey.
