Parenting

The thought of becoming a parent can be overwhelming at any time, especially if the news of your pregnancy is unexpected.

Carrying a pregnancy to term comes with physical and mental health risks as well as subsequent responsibilities that may be intimidating. You may even feel anxious about the idea of giving birth. It’s important to consider these challenges and the available supports as you think through the options related to your pregnancy.

Possible pregnancy and delivery risks may include gestational diabetes, pre-term labour, necessary medical interventions such as cesarean sections, postpartum bleeding (lochia), fatigue, contractions after birth, urine leakage, and postpartum recovery challenges. Some people may also experience postpartum depression, baby blues, increased stress, or feelings of isolation after pregnancy or while parenting. For more information about pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum health in Canada and Quebec, you can visit the Government of Canada Pregnancy ResourcesGovernment of Quebec – Ma Grossesse, and Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada – Pregnancy Info.

Many people consider parenthood at some point in their lives. Although the timing and your current situation may not be what you had planned, your pregnancy offers you the possibility of experiencing the highs and lows that come with nurturing and guiding a child's development.

It's natural to have concerns about various aspects of parenting, including finances, education, and employment. We're here to assist you in exploring daycare options, free or low-cost baby supplies, and government assistance. Additionally, we can help you collect information on employment laws, maternity benefits, and budgeting.

Parenting can also bring emotional, relational, and practical challenges, especially during seasons of transition, limited support, or financial strain. We can help connect you with parenting classes, prenatal education, moms’ groups, community supports, food and material assistance programs, and referrals to additional local resources in the Eastern Townships and Quebec.

When considering such a significant life decision, it's important to evaluate your current needs alongside your future aspirations. This will help you make a decision that aligns with your values and vision for your life. Our goal is to support you in making an informed and confident decision, throughout your pregnancy and beyond.

Parenting Resources

You may have heard the proverb "It takes a village to raise a child”, meaning that it takes many people (“the village”) to provide a safe, healthy environment for children, where children are given the security they need to develop and flourish, and to be able to realize their hopes and dreams.

Your village can be found in different places: within your immediate family, among friends, in a church, or through community organizations. We can help you identify the resources within your network, so you never have to walk alone. We can refer you to the appropriate organizations, as well as give you information regarding prenatal classes, moms’ groups, and parenting classes.

If the option of parenting interests you but you feel overwhelmed by everything you need to know, consider looking into parenting classes. These can help prepare you for parenting and can be a great way to meet other parents and build new friendships. We are excited to be developing programs that are available at no or low cost.

Hope is possible in every path you choose
